Description

The school was founded in 1969 and has a beautiful site of ten hectares surrounded by woodland near the Royal Museum of Central Africa in Tervuren, some 25-30 minutes by car from central Brussels.

The School is a co-educational day school for students from 1 to 18 years with 1280 currently on roll: there are 209 students in the Sixth Form. 52% of the students are British and over 70 other nationalities are represented. Entry is non-selective and students are accepted regardless of race, colour or creed.

The School offers a British curriculum within a European and international context and courses lead to GCSE and GCE Advanced Level qualifications in both academic and vocational subjects. The IB programme is also offered. Provision is made for Oxbridge tuition. Examination results are impressive. The A Level pass rate in the last ten years has averaged over 98%. French is taught from the age of five and German, Dutch or Spanish from age eleven.

There is an Additional Educational Needs Department, with its own Educational Psychologist and Counsellor. Arrangements are available in host families for senior students who may need to board for short periods.

Most of the buildings have been completely rebuilt or refurbished since 1990 and the School is excellently equipped. Facilities and resources in the Secondary School include a maths and science centre with eight science laboratories; modern languages and geography suites; dance and drama studios; technology suites and art and design studios.

There are 4 networked ICT rooms and an enormous on-going investment programme in ICT is being implemented throughout the School with over 500 computers now available to students as well as an Apple Mac suite.

BSB's own nursery, "Kindercrib", is located in a villa adjacent to the main School.

A new Junior multi-purpose hall and a Post-16 building and Business Centre opened in September 2004 and the International Baccalaureate Programme is now offered to run in parallel with A Levels.

Use of the extensive sports facilities (gymnasia, sports fields, tennis/squash courts, indoor sports hall) and the Arts Centre make the School a focal point for the local community. A wide range of sports is offered - athletics, gymnastics, hockey, rugby, soccer, tennis - and the School participates very successfully in the International Schools Sports Tournaments

There is a wide range of extra-curricular activities, in drama, music and sport, and there are numerous opportunities for overseas travel and school journeys.

The School has a well-resourced Careers Department, which provides advice on world-wide higher and further education courses.

The Principal is a member of HMC.
